Scoop Beta 0.31 release
Following some initial feedback on the Scoop Beta 0.30 from RefreshingApps and a few Technical Blogs now reviewing the software I’ve made some enhancments to the application in the latest update 0.31. These include:
- Optimization of feed updates for both non Google Reader account holders and those with Google Reader logins. The initial import takes a little while if you’ve got a lot of feeds to sync but the regular updates after that should not be a lot quicker and less of a processor hog
- Command+Q on OS X now quits the app
If you’ve already downloaded an earlier version of Scoop just quit the app and reopen it - wait a couple of seconds and you should be prompted with an Upgrade Available window which will enable you to update your version of the App.

Hi,
I downloaded 0.3 yesterday and updated to 0.31 earlier today. But in none of them the Google Reader Synchronisation seems to work. I read above that it might take a while at the first time but I’ve had the program running now for more than 30 minutes and nothing happened yet. It doesn’t really freeze up but it only says “Synchronizing with Google” all the time…

Hi Tom
What Operating System are you on?
It shouldn’t take 30mins for the first sync with your Google account so sounds like there may be a problem during the initial sync.
There are 3 initial stages in the first sync and they run in the following sequence:
1) Scoop adds any example feeds you selected to your local profile
2) Scoop grabs the latest stories from those feeds
Next ones assume you’ve entered valid google reader username/password:
3) Scoop logs into Google
4) After a successful login Scoop passes the local feeds/tags from the profile to Google to sync them with your Google account
5) Scoop then grabs all you google feeds and updates the local feed tree
6) Scoop then runs through each feed and grabs the latest 10 stories from that feed.
To see what’s going wrong I need to know from you if you get to any of the stages above?
1) Do the initial feed titles appear (Scoop Blog is selected by default)?
2) If yes then does your list of google feed titles also appear in the feed tree soon after 1?
3) If your feeds titles appear but not the actual posts then the problem could be that one of your feeds is failing. If this is the case then it’d be very helpful if you could do the following:
1) Log into google reader online and in settings/manage subscriptions export your feeds as an OPML file - send me that file - info [at] scoop.uk.com
I’ll take a look at see if I can find the culprit.
Thanks
Nick

Well, so I tried it again.
- Created a new profile
- Entered a profile name and my Gmail-address & password.
- Clicked Save
- Now the Example-Feeds load as expected, also the feed items in them
- Scoop apparently logs in to Google successfully
- It says “Synchronizing with Google”
- Nothing else happens. That’s it.
I checked the network traffic with Windows Task Manager while Scoop is supposed to sync with Google. Nothing happens there as well.
By the way I use Windows Vista.
By the way I have the letter ü and a space in my Windows username (and thus in the path to the “C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\com.nickkuh.scoop.SOME_LETTERS_AND NUMBERS” folder). Might this be a problem?

Hi,
I’m trying to install this version on linux. I have the latest air installed (availabe at http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/air/linux/adobeair_linux_b1_091508.bin).
It gives me this error:
“This application requires a version of Adobe AIR which is no longer supported. Please
contact the application author for an updated version”
Do you know why?
Thanks!

Hi Tom - can u email me your OPML export which will just include your list of feeds so I can test if one of them is the problem?
ARades - what is the current beta version of AIR for Linux? 1 or 1.5? Latest version of Scoop is exported for AIR 1.5

Hi Nick.
Great application works as it should.
One major feature request: Add a full screen option, as it’s Flash based.
I just love seeing things in full screen, Flickr slideshows, Youtube videos. And now Scoop. ![]()

having the exact same problem as tom, never gets past syncing
on vista x64 sp1

Hi Jeton - full screen sounds like a feature worth adding - will try to do so in one of the next updates.
Faisal - any chance you could export your feeds as OMPL via Google Reader and email the exported file to info [at] scoop.uk.com so I can try and reproduce the issue?
Cheers
Nick
Hi Nick, I’ve just got Scoop after finding it on Refreshing Apps. I think it’s quite good and has a big future, but right now it lacks so many features compared to NetNewsWire (on Mac) which I currently use and which syncs with Newsgator.com
The multiple account feature is a big plus for me, but no sub-folders means I have a huge list of subscriptions (about 300). I can’t select multiple feeds and I can’t mark a folder to not refresh. I’ll subscribe to your blog, but it needs much more before I can make it my default reader.
Hi Nick,
I work with AIR Linux team. This app doesn’t work fine on Linux, as it creates an additional maximized transparent window. This window is transparent, but click pass through transparent areas, doesn’t work on Linux. So if you click anywhere on this app, outside app control goes to maximized additional window and no click pass through that making not just app but system seem unresponsive.
You can remove that transparent maximized window to make it work fine or if you can share code, we can help fixing this issue.

Ashish Baweja

Hi Ashish
The transparent window is used by Scoop to display the profile form error messages so that they are able to ‘float’ above the main native window no matter how big/small it is - it’s something I’d prefer not to remove from the app so if there’s a way to ensure this doesn’t prevent the app from working in Linux then I’d like to get it fixed of course.
I’ve added you as a new svn user in CVS Dude. Let me know if you’re able to fix this - much appreciated!
Ian - sub folders coming in next update.
I’ll also take a better look at NetNewsWire in the meantime - thanks for the feedback.

I am having the exact same problem as Tom. I left it go overnight, like 15hrs, and it never populated any of my google reader feeds. I am on XP Pro with no funky folder names.

Just to let you guys know, I think I know what’s causing the error some of your are experiencing and I’ve been working on a fix which I hope to be able to release later today. Will add to the comments here when I do.

Update 0.32 now available. Improved stability for Google Syncing added. To update restart Scoop and wait for the AIR Update pop-up and then follow the installation instructions.
You may want to delete previous profiles and input your google reader login details afresh. It’s set up to download the most recent 10 items from each of you google reader feeds asynchronously. More status updates now added so if it stalls you’ll be able to tell me what point it got to ![]()

Nick, I love the Scoop application, but I did notice some lag when I click on the feed title. After Scoop retrieves my Google Reader feeds and is offline. I get a lag when clicking on the feed titles. It takes about 3 seconds for the list of feeds to show up. I figured it would be fast since it’s already downloaded.

Nick, I have a request.

Can we have an option for Scoop to only show updated feeds. In Google Reader this is an option that filters out any old feeds that have already been read. This keeps things clean with only the feeds that are new. Some feeds I subscribe to have hundreds of feeds a day and Scoop displays all the old feeds. I am only interested in new updated feeds.
Thanks.

Where does scoop hold its offline data for windows?
April 23, 2009
it seems to be a really cool rss reader, but i could not make it work. when i open the app, it shows me an alert (your user and pass were not authenticated by google), but this is not my problem: if i press check details or cancel, i could not do anything. The app. comes completely bloked…i could not click anywere…i could not add, delete, read, or even press anything over the GUI…just the minimize, maximize and close buttons…
i think in my case it´s not just a problem when loggin in google…
and another thing: i´ve uninstalled and reinstalled it, but i´ve never see again the first config page where i´ve put my mail…i would try to remove my email acount but i couldnt. and even if i reinstall the program, it seems to be that my user and pass data is save somewere cos when i run scoop again it go directly to the alert of google sinc problem.
…i´ve pass the ccleaner but there´s no case…
i´m using windows vista 64 bit…
i hope i could use it sometime, i´m an air development too =) and i think this must be an incredible app…but i could not make ir work
